Crouse-Hinds Arktite and Appleton Powertite: Pin-and-Sleeve Selection Guide
Crouse-Hinds Arktite and Appleton Powertite devices are heavy-duty metallic pin-and-sleeve products used in industrial plants, utilities, refineries, marine facilities and other demanding environments.
The two families can look similar from a distance, but appearance is not proof of interchangeability. Product series, electrical ratings, contact arrangement, keying, enclosure construction and approvals must all be verified.
What Are Arktite and Powertite Devices?
These systems provide robust power connections through plugs, receptacles, connectors and equipment-mounted inlets. Depending on the specific series, products may be intended for ordinary industrial locations, wet or corrosive environments, or classified hazardous locations.
Common features include cast-metal housings, recessed contacts, heavy cable clamps, gasketed interfaces and spring-loaded receptacle covers.
Information Needed Before Ordering
1. Manufacturer and Exact Series
Determine whether the existing device is Eaton Crouse-Hinds Arktite or Emerson Appleton Powertite, then record the complete catalog number from both mating halves when possible.
Never identify a device solely by housing shape.
2. Amperage
Heavy-duty pin-and-sleeve systems are available across multiple current ratings, commonly including 30, 60, 100 and higher ampere sizes. Housing size alone is not a reliable rating indicator.
3. Voltage, Phase and Frequency
Record the actual circuit voltage, phase and frequency. Confirm that each half of the connection carries the correct rating.
4. Poles and Wires
Identify the complete contact arrangement, including the grounding contact. A 3-wire, 4-pole device is not interchangeable with a 3-pole arrangement merely because the bodies appear similar.
5. Plug, Receptacle, Connector or Inlet
Confirm whether the device is:
- A cord-mounted plug
- A cord connector
- An angle or straight receptacle
- An equipment-mounted inlet
- A mechanically interlocked assembly
Also note the conduit hub or cable-entry size and orientation.
6. Ordinary or Hazardous Location
Some Arktite and Powertite families are intended for heavy-duty ordinary-location service, while other specifically listed constructions are used in hazardous locations.
Record every class, division, zone and material-group marking. A heavy cast-aluminum housing is not automatically explosionproof.
7. Environmental and Corrosion Requirements
Review exposure to water, dust, oil, salt, chemicals and corrosive atmospheres. Confirm applicable enclosure and material requirements for both connected and disconnected conditions.
8. Cable and Conduit Entry
For portable equipment, record cable outside diameter, conductor size and cable type. For fixed receptacles, verify conduit hub size, thread type and mounting arrangement.
9. Horsepower and Disconnect Duty
If the connection is used as a motor disconnect, confirm the device’s horsepower and load-breaking ratings. Do not disconnect under load unless the complete device is rated and installed for that duty.
10. Mating Compatibility
Use the manufacturer’s current compatibility and replacement information. Never force two devices together, modify keys or assume that similar Crouse-Hinds and Appleton products are cross-compatible.
