Plug-In Circuit Breakers: Types, Compatibility and Replacement Guide
Plug-in circuit breakers are widely used in residential load centers and some light-commercial or industrial panels. They attach to the panel bus without the mounting screws used by bolt-on breakers.
The installation may look simple, but breakers are not universal. The panel label and breaker listing determine what can be installed—not whether a breaker happens to fit onto the bus.
Plug-In vs. Bolt-On Breakers
A plug-in breaker uses a spring clip or jaw to connect to the panel bus. A bolt-on breaker is mechanically fastened to the bus with screws or bolts and is common in commercial panelboards.
Products with similar handles and case sizes may use different mounting systems. Always identify both the breaker and the panelboard.
Information Needed Before Ordering
1. Panel Manufacturer and Model
Photograph the complete panel label inside the door or enclosure. It normally identifies the load-center series and the breaker types permitted for use.
2. Existing Breaker Catalog Number
Record the full catalog number, not just the amperage printed on the handle. Breaker family letters and suffixes identify the mounting, protection features, interrupting rating and other details.
3. Number of Poles
- One-pole breakers commonly protect 120-volt branch circuits.
- Two-pole breakers commonly protect 240-volt loads or multiwire circuits.
- Three-pole plug-in breakers appear in certain three-phase panels.
Do not substitute two independent one-pole breakers where a common-trip or approved handle arrangement is required.
4. Ampere Rating and Conductor Size
The replacement ampere rating must be appropriate for the conductor, load and circuit design. Never increase the breaker size to stop nuisance tripping without identifying the cause and verifying the complete circuit.
5. Voltage Rating
Confirm the system voltage and the breaker’s voltage rating. A slash rating such as 120/240 volts has specific system limitations and is not interchangeable with every straight-voltage rating.
6. Interrupting Rating
The breaker’s interrupting rating must be at least equal to the available fault current unless an approved series-rated combination is used. Common residential breakers may be marked 10 kA, but other ratings are available.
7. Standard, AFCI, GFCI or Dual Function
- A standard thermal-magnetic breaker provides overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
- An AFCI breaker detects specified arcing-fault conditions.
- A GFCI breaker provides ground-fault personnel protection at its listed trip level.
- A dual-function breaker combines AFCI and GFCI functions.
Match the required protection and verify applicable electrical-code requirements.
8. Pigtail vs. Plug-On Neutral
Traditional electronic breakers often use a coiled neutral pigtail connected to the neutral bar. Plug-on-neutral breakers connect to a dedicated neutral rail in a compatible plug-on-neutral panel.
The two styles are not automatically interchangeable. Check the panel labeling and breaker instructions.
9. Full-Size, Tandem or Quad
Tandem and quad breakers place more circuits into limited panel spaces, but they can only be used where the panel is designed and labeled to accept them. The panel diagram identifies the permitted positions.
10. Classified Replacement Breakers
Some breakers are specifically classified for use in listed competitive panels. A classified breaker must name the applicable panel types and conditions. A breaker that merely fits is not a classified replacement.

Common Replacement Mistakes
- Buying by handle color or case shape
- Installing a breaker not listed for the panel
- Increasing amperage without evaluating the wire and load
- Confusing AFCI, GFCI and dual-function protection
- Installing plug-on-neutral equipment in an incompatible panel
- Using tandems in spaces not designed for them
- Ignoring interrupting rating or series-rating requirements
