Selecting the correct plug, connector or receptacle requires matching much more than amperage. Voltage, pin count, clock position, grounding arrangement, environmental rating and device type must all agree.

What Is an IEC Pin-and-Sleeve Device?

IEC pin-and-sleeve wiring devices use round pins, recessed contacts, keyed housings and color identification to help prevent mismating. A typical system includes:

  • Plugs for attachment to portable cords
  • Connectors for cord-to-cord connections
  • Receptacles for mounting to a wall, box or enclosure
  • Inlets for power entry into equipment
  • Mechanical-interlock or switch-rated assemblies

Information Needed Before Ordering

1. Complete Hubbell Catalog Number

Start with the full number from the device body. Hubbell suffixes and series designations can identify ratings, watertight features, terminals and special constructions.

2. Amperage

Common IEC pin-and-sleeve ratings include 20/16, 30/32, 60/63 and 100/125 amps, depending on the standard and product series. Both mating devices must have the correct rating.

3. Voltage and Color Code

IEC devices commonly use color to identify a voltage family, but color alone is not enough. Read the device marking and confirm the actual system voltage and frequency.

4. Poles and Wires

Identify the required configuration, such as:

  • 2-pole, 3-wire
  • 3-pole, 4-wire
  • 4-pole, 5-wire

The grounding contact is included in the wire count. Count and inspect the contacts rather than relying on the outside diameter.

5. Clock Position

The ground-contact clock position keys the device for a particular voltage and frequency range. Devices with different clock positions are designed not to mate.

6. Plug, Connector, Receptacle or Inlet

Verify the exact device type and whether it is cord-mounted, panel-mounted, angle-mounted or part of an interlocked assembly.

7. Environmental Rating

Check the application for dust, water, washdown, corrosion, chemicals and outdoor exposure. Confirm both the enclosure rating and the rating maintained when devices are connected or covers are closed.

8. Cable Range and Strain Relief

Cord diameter, conductor size and jacket type must fit the device’s terminal and sealing range. The wrong cable diameter can compromise strain relief and environmental sealing.

9. Switch-Rated or Interlocked Requirements

Some applications require a device evaluated for load-breaking or motor-disconnect duty. An interlocked receptacle prevents insertion or withdrawal unless the switch is in the proper position.

Do not assume every standard plug and receptacle has the same disconnect rating.

10. Mating Compatibility

Confirm the manufacturer, series, amperage, voltage, poles, clock position and standards. “IEC style” does not guarantee that two devices are approved as a mating pair.
